Post and core is a dental repair procedure that is sometimes used after a root canal. A post and core can assist maintain a dental crown in place when a major piece of the tooth’s structure is removed. To protect teeth from additional injury or infection, dental crowns are placed on top of them.

What materials are used in a post and core?

Posts can be made from metal, porcelain, or a fibrous resin, while cores can be made from a tooth coloured composite filling material or a silver amalgam filling material. Alternatively, the post and core can be made from a single solid piece of porcelain or gold alloy.

How long does a post and core last?

According to one study, teeth restored with metal posts and cores can last for an average of 13.5 years from the time of post insertion to tooth extraction.

A post and core might not be suitable for patients with certain tooth root canal characteristics, such
as a short or curved root canal, a brittle root, or a profound bite.
